Marvel in 1967
September 9, 1967 was a big Saturday morning for Marvel on ABC. Two new cartoons premiered that day: Spider-Man, the first TV series built around the wall-crawler, and Hanna-Barbera's The Fantastic Four, designed by Alex Toth.
Spider-Man had the rougher road behind the scenes. Grantray-Lawrence made the first season in Toronto, went bankrupt, and Krantz Films took over, with Ralph Bakshi overseeing seasons two and three. Yet it is the show that lasted, thanks to a theme song covered by the Ramones and Michael Bublé and a scene of two Spider-Men pointing at each other that became an internet meme. Later Spider-Man films still have fun with that gag. The Fantastic Four ran 20 episodes and earned a brief nod in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025.
