Are Marvel Movies OK for Kids?
Updated
Almost every MCU movie is rated PG-13. Only one is rated R (Deadpool & Wolverine). Below is every MCU film's US rating, the age we'd suggest, and what's actually in it. (Counting films made outside the MCU too? 11 more are R-rated: The Punisher (1991), Blade (1998), Blade II (2002), The Punisher (2004), Blade: Trinity (2004), Man-Thing (2005), Punisher: War Zone (2008), Deadpool (2016), Logan (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018) and Kraven the Hunter (2024). See our list of Marvel movies outside the MCU.)
Ratings on this page are the official US ratings from the MPA (for films) and TV Parental Guidelines (for series). Other countries rate differently, so check your local rating too. The suggested ages are our own editorial judgment, not an official rating: every child is different, and you know yours best.
The short answer by age
- Ages 7 to 9: Start with the friendliest: Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ms. Marvel are the safest bets. Guardians of the Galaxy is funny but has language. Skip the Avengers finales for now.
- Ages 10 to 12: Most of the MCU works. The PG-13 is for sci-fi action violence, intense but rarely graphic. Preview Avengers: Infinity War first; its ending is heavy.
- Ages 13+: The full PG-13 MCU. The exception is the R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine (strong language, graphic violence, sexual content): we’d suggest 17+, but you know your teen.

If the MCU is too intense: start here
Not every young fan is ready for PG-13 superhero combat. These are the best on-ramps:
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse: animated, thrilling, and two of the best Spider-Man films ever made. We'd suggest ages 8+ (both are rated PG).
- Big Hero 6: Disney animation with a Marvel heart; gentle, funny, emotional. Rated PG; we'd suggest ages 7+.
- Ms. Marvel (Disney+ series): the most kid-friendly live-action MCU: a 16-year-old hero, bright tone, minimal intensity.
- Spider-Man: Homecoming: the friendliest live-action MCU film; a teenager's story first, superhero film second.
- I Am Groot (Disney+ shorts): five-minute animated shorts. Almost no plot, all charm, and rated TV-PG. Ideal for the youngest fans.
FAQ
Are Marvel movies appropriate for a 10-year-old?
Mostly yes. The MCU is PG-13 for action violence, but it is stylized superhero combat, not gore. The main concerns are intensity (Infinity War/Endgame) and mild language.
Which Marvel movies are rated R?
In the MCU, only Deadpool & Wolverine is rated R in the US. Among Marvel films made outside the MCU, 11 more are R-rated: The Punisher (1991), Blade (1998), Blade II (2002), The Punisher (2004), Blade: Trinity (2004), Man-Thing (2005), Punisher: War Zone (2008), Deadpool (2016), Logan (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018) and Kraven the Hunter (2024).
Is Deadpool OK for kids?
No. The Deadpool films are hard-R: graphic violence, constant strong language, and sexual content. Deadpool & Wolverine is the only R-rated MCU film, so it is the one to save for older teens.
What is the most kid-friendly Marvel movie?
Spider-Man: Homecoming is our pick for live action, with The Marvels and Ms. Marvel (a series) close behind: light tone, low intensity, heroes kids can look up to. For younger kids, the animated Spider-Verse films and Big Hero 6 are gentler still.
Do the Disney+ Marvel shows have different ratings?
Yes. They use US TV ratings instead of MPA film ratings. Most are TV-PG or TV-14 (roughly the PG to PG-13 range). Daredevil: Born Again and Echo are rated TV-MA for bloody violence, on par with the Netflix shows, so check each series before a family watch.
