Why it matters now
Two dream fights fans had wanted for years, Hulk vs. Wolverine and Hulk vs. Thor, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more.
About Hulk Vs.
Hulk Vs. puts two short animated films on one disc. Hulk vs. Wolverine borrows its setup from a classic 1974 comic, with Wolverine sent after the Hulk. Hulk vs. Thor moves the fight to Asgard, where Loki uses the Hulk against his brother. Each half is its own story, so you can watch them in either order.
It was the sixth of eight Marvel Animated Features, made by MLG Productions, a joint venture between Marvel and Lions Gate, with Japan's Madhouse among the production companies. Frank Paur supervised as director, and Christopher Yost wrote both screenplays, with Craig Kyle also credited as a writer. Fred Tatasciore voices the Hulk, and Steve Blum voices Wolverine. It came out on DVD and Blu-ray on January 27, 2009, and runs 78 minutes in total: 45 for Thor and 33 for Wolverine. Reviews of the Marvel Animated Features were mixed, but critics generally liked Hulk vs. Wolverine more than the Thor half.
Good to know
- Hulk vs. Wolverine draws on The Incredible Hulk #181 (1974), the comic where Wolverine made his first full appearance.
- Steve Blum, who voices Wolverine here, also plays him in Wolverine and the X-Men and Marvel Anime: X-Men.
- Writers Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost also developed Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes.
- It was followed in the Marvel Animated Features line by Planet Hulk (2010).
How to watch it
Watch this as a standalone, since it isn't tied to the MCU or to other animated continuities. Start with Hulk vs. Wolverine, the shorter and better-reviewed half, then watch Hulk vs. Thor. It works as a warm-up for Planet Hulk (2010), the next film in the same line, and it's a fun companion to Thor: Ragnarok if you enjoy seeing Hulk and Thor go at each other. Both halves are more violent than the average Marvel cartoon, so check before showing young kids.
