Why it matters now
The centerpiece of the Marvel Rising initiative, a deliberate push for younger, more diverse heroes (Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, America Chavez) that predated their live-action debuts.
About Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors
Kamala Khan is a teenage Inhuman who can shapeshift, and with her friend Doreen Green, Squirrel Girl, she wants to prove that Inhumans can be heroes, not threats. Their investigations draw in S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Quake and Patriot along with America Chavez and Dante Pertuz, also called Inferno. Meanwhile, Hala the Accuser is recruiting Inhumans for the Kree through her agent Exile.
Marvel Animation produced the 80-minute TV movie, which premiered on Disney Channel and Disney XD at the same time on September 30, 2018. Mairghread Scott wrote it and Alfred Gimeno was supervising director. The voice cast includes Kathreen Khavari as Kamala, Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Cierra Ramirez as America Chavez, Tyler Posey as Inferno and Kim Raver as Captain Marvel. Critics liked the diverse cast and its themes of acceptance and teamwork.
