About Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow
Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow is an animated movie set in a future where Ultron has won. Tony Stark has spent years raising the Avengers' children in a hidden Arctic refuge. The kids are James Rogers, son of Captain America and Black Widow; Torunn, daughter of Thor and Sif; Azari, son of Black Panther and Storm; and Henry Pym Jr., son of Giant-Man and the Wasp. When an accident gives away their location, the teenagers have to head into Ultron's city, built on the ruins of New York.
It came out direct to video on September 2, 2008, from Lionsgate and Marvel. It was the fifth of the Marvel Animated Features. Jay Oliva and Gary Hartle directed, and Christopher Yost, Greg Johnson and Craig Kyle wrote the script. Noah Crawford voices James, Brenna O'Brien voices Torunn, and Tom Kane voices Iron Man. It runs 78 minutes. Reviews were mixed: IGN liked it, while DVD Talk found the action repetitive.
Good to know
- The project began life as Teen Avengers, was renamed Avengers Reborn, and became Next Avengers before release.
- Tom Kane plays both Iron Man and Ultron, so the hero and the villain share a voice.
- Francis Barton, the son of Hawkeye and Mockingbird, leads a resistance group called the Scavengers.
- Marvel brought the Next Avengers into the comics in 2010, in the opening arc of Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr.'s Avengers.
How to watch it
It stands on its own, so you don't need anything first, though Ultimate Avengers and Ultimate Avengers 2 come before it in the Marvel Animated Features line. It's a lighter, kid-friendly take on an Ultron apocalypse, which makes it a good pick for younger fans who aren't ready for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Adults who like legacy-hero stories will get a kick out of seeing whose child is whose.
