Why it matters now
Dolph Lundgren's Punisher ditched the skull logo but kept the brutality. It's a grim '80s action movie and the character's first screen outing.
About The Punisher
This is the first live-action Punisher movie. Frank Castle is a former cop presumed dead after a Mafia car bomb kills his wife and daughters. He lives in the city's sewers and picks off mobsters one by one. When the Yakuza, led by Lady Tanaka, start kidnapping the mob bosses' children, Castle ends up in an uneasy deal with his old enemies to get the kids back.
New World made it with Marvel. Mark Goldblatt directed from a script by Boaz Yakin, and it was shot mostly in Melbourne in 1988 on a budget of about $9 million. Dolph Lundgren plays Castle, with Louis Gossett Jr. as Detective Jake Berkowitz, Jeroen Krabbé as mob boss Gianni Franco and Kim Miyori as Tanaka. It opened in Europe in 1989, made about $30 million overseas, and in the US went straight to video in April 1991. Critics were cool on it at the time. It has since built a cult following.
Good to know
- Castle never wears the skull emblem, a choice Goldblatt later said he regretted.
- Garth Ennis, one of the Punisher's defining comic writers, called it the most honest adaptation of the character.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for the lead, but his fee would have used up most of the budget.
- Lundgren lost 25 pounds for the role and did many of his own stunts.
- It didn't get a US theatrical screening until the 2008 Escapism Film Festival.
How to watch it
Start with this one if you want to watch every screen Punisher in order. Thomas Jane's 2004 film, Punisher: War Zone and Jon Bernthal's Netflix series all come after it, and none of them are connected. It's pure late-'80s action, so expect one-liners and a big body count rather than comic-book faithfulness. Fans of Lundgren and VHS-era action movies will enjoy it most.
