It won the Oscar, its comic-book visual style changed the look of animation, and it proved Miles Morales could carry the Spider-mantle.

About Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales gets bitten by a radioactive spider while painting graffiti in an abandoned subway station with his uncle Aaron. He soon finds out the Kingpin has built a collider there to reach parallel universes. The machine pulls other Spider-People into Miles's world, including a worn-out Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Spider-Ham, and they all need to stop it before it tears New York apart.

Sony Pictures Animation made it with Columbia Pictures and Marvel. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman directed from a script by Phil Lord and Rothman, and Lord and Christopher Miller produced. Shameik Moore voices Miles, with Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Kathryn Hahn and Liev Schreiber. Released in December 2018, it made about $395 million on a $90 million budget and won the Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics' Choice awards for animated feature.

How to watch it

It's self-contained and set outside the MCU, so you can watch it any time. Follow it with Across the Spider-Verse (2023), then Beyond the Spider-Verse when it arrives in June 2027. Seeing a live-action Spider-Man origin first helps some of the jokes land, but it isn't required. It's an easy pick for families, animation fans and anyone who thinks they're tired of origin stories.
