Why it’s worth knowing about
Peggy Carter works at the SSR after the war while clearing Howard Stark’s name. A good companion to The First Avenger.
About Agent Carter: Season 1
Season 1 picks up in 1946, a year after Peggy Carter lost Steve Rogers. Back in New York, she spends her days fetching coffee and filing reports for the men of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, who see her as little more than Cap's old flame. When Howard Stark is accused of selling his weapons to America's enemies, he asks Peggy to clear his name in secret. With Stark's butler Edwin Jarvis as her reluctant partner, she ends up chasing the shadowy organization Leviathan while her own colleagues start to suspect her.
The eight episodes aired on ABC from January 6 to February 24, 2015, filling the winter break of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas and Chris Dingess ran the show, which grew out of the 2013 Marvel One-Shot short Agent Carter. Hayley Atwell leads, with James D'Arcy as Jarvis, Chad Michael Murray as Jack Thompson, Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa and Shea Whigham as Chief Roger Dooley. Critics loved Atwell and the period setting, and the season sits at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, though ratings slid from a 6.91 million premiere to about 4 million by the finale.
Good to know
- Dominic Cooper returns as Howard Stark, and Neal McDonough reprises Dum Dum Dugan from Captain America: The First Avenger.
- The season ends on a scene that ties into a much later chapter of the MCU, so stay sharp in the finale.
- Peggy's women-only boarding house, the Griffith, is based on New York's real Barbizon Hotel for Women.
- ABC ordered the show straight to series in May 2014 without making a pilot.
Spoiler Spoilers for Agent Carter: Season 1: tap to reveal
- Dottie Underwood, a Leviathan sleeper agent posing as Peggy's neighbor, comes out of a program that's a precursor to the Black Widow program, though the name is never used.
- Toby Jones briefly reprises Arnim Zola, and the final scene hints at the beginnings of the Winter Soldier program.
- The season's real mastermind is Johann Fennhoff, who spends much of it posing as a friendly Soviet doctor named Ivchenko.
How to watch it
Watch this right after Captain America: The First Avenger, ideally with the short Agent Carter One-Shot in between, since it covers the same stretch of Peggy's life. It's only eight episodes and tells one complete story, so it works well as a weekend binge. Fans of spy stories and period dramas will get the most out of it. Pay attention to Jarvis, because he later becomes the inspiration for Tony Stark's AI and turns up in Avengers: Endgame.

Agent Carter: Season 1 FAQ
Is Agent Carter connected to the Agent Carter One-Shot?
Yes. The series grew out of the 2013 Marvel One-Shot short, which also starred Hayley Atwell, and it's set in the same postwar period.
Is Edwin Jarvis the same Jarvis as Tony Stark's AI?
Not exactly. Edwin Jarvis is Howard Stark's human butler, and he's the person who later inspires Tony's J.A.R.V.I.S. program. James D'Arcy reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame, the first time a character from an MCU TV show appeared in an MCU film.
Who is the villain in Agent Carter season 1?
The main threat is Leviathan, a Soviet-linked organization, and the operatives it sends after Peggy and Howard Stark. Who those operatives really are is part of the mystery, so we keep the names in the spoiler box above.
Can you skip Agent Carter: Season 1?
Yes. It sits outside the MCU timeline, so nothing in the MCU depends on it.
How many episodes does Agent Carter: Season 1 have?
Agent Carter: Season 1 has 8 episodes, around 45 minutes each.
Is Agent Carter: Season 1 part of the MCU?
It was made by Marvel Television alongside the MCU films. Marvel has since folded some of these shows into its official timeline; see our Netflix and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. canon guides for details.
