Why it’s worth knowing about

S.H.I.E.L.D. rebuilds in secret after Hydra’s exposure, and the Inhumans are introduced.

About Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 2

Season 2 opens with S.H.I.E.L.D. shattered after Hydra's infiltration was exposed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Director Phil Coulson runs a small, hunted team from a hidden base, chasing a strange alien artifact called the Obelisk before Hydra's Daniel Whitehall can use it. The hunt digs into Skye's mysterious parents and opens the door to the Inhumans, people tied to the Kree whose powers are unlocked by Terrigen crystals. The second half splits the agency itself, as a rival faction calling itself the "real S.H.I.E.L.D." challenges Coulson's leadership.

ABC aired the 22 episodes from September 23, 2014, to May 12, 2015, under showrunners Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell. The season ran as a block of ten episodes, a break for Agent Carter, then twelve more. New faces include Reed Diamond as Whitehall, Kyle MacLachlan as Skye's father, Edward James Olmos as Robert Gonzales and Adrianne Palicki, who became a series regular as Bobbi Morse. Ratings dropped from season 1, but critics felt the show found its footing, and the season holds 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Good to know

How to watch it

Watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier and season 1 first, because this season is built on Hydra's exposure. Most people agree the show gets much stronger here, so stick with it. Time Avengers: Age of Ultron to land between "The Dirty Half Dozen" and "Scars." The first ten episodes build to a big midseason turning point before the Agent Carter break. Anyone who liked serialized spy shows with a sci-fi streak will be at home.
