About Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 3
Season 3 opens six months after season 2, with Terrigen spreading and turning ordinary people into Inhumans around the world. Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D. races to find them first, while a new government task force, the ATCU led by Rosalind Price, wants to contain them. Daisy Johnson assembles a team of powered agents called the Secret Warriors. Behind it all, Hydra's Gideon Malick is working to bring back Hive, an ancient Inhuman banished long ago, and Simmons returns from an alien planet with secrets of her own.
ABC aired 22 episodes from September 29, 2015, to May 17, 2016, again run by Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell. Henry Simmons and Luke Mitchell were promoted to regulars, and Constance Zimmer (Price), Powers Boothe (Malick) and John Hannah (Holden Radcliffe) join, while Adrian Pasdar's Glenn Talbot and Blair Underwood's Andrew Garner return in bigger roles. Critics said the series had hit its stride, though some found the season tried to juggle too much.
Good to know
- "4,722 Hours" is a bottle episode set almost entirely on an alien planet with Simmons, and it's widely praised as one of the show's best.
- "Emancipation" ties into Captain America: Civil War, bringing the Sokovia Accords and the question of registering Inhumans into the show.
- Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter exit in "Parting Shot," which was meant to set up a spin-off called Marvel's Most Wanted.
- "Many Heads, One Tale" reworks the MCU's history of Hydra.
- Daisy's Secret Warriors bring a team from the comics to live action.
How to watch it
Finish season 2 first, since the season builds directly on the Terrigen outbreak. Watch Captain America: Civil War before "Emancipation," which follows the film and deals with the Sokovia Accords. If you're short on time, don't skip "4,722 Hours" or the back half of the season, where the Hive storyline takes over. Viewers who like big ensemble casts and superpowered team-ups will enjoy this one.
