Why it’s worth knowing about
Where Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin begin. Both now appear in MCU titles, so this is the backstory for Born Again.
About Daredevil: Season 1
Season 1 tells Matt Murdock's early days as a vigilante. He and his friend Foggy Nelson are just opening their law office in a Hell's Kitchen still rebuilding from the Battle of New York, and their first big client, Karen Page, leads them into a cover-up at Union Allied. By night Matt wears a homemade black mask and fights traffickers and gangsters, slowly discovering that the neighborhood's crime is controlled by one man, Wilson Fisk. The season runs Matt's story alongside Fisk's, including his romance with Vanessa, so both sides of the war are developed.
Drew Goddard created the series and wrote the first two episodes before handing showrunning to Steven S. DeKnight. Charlie Cox leads as Matt, with Vincent D'Onofrio as Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen, Elden Henson as Foggy, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Vondie Curtis-Hall as Ben Urich and Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa. All 13 hour-long episodes were released on Netflix on April 10, 2015. Critics loved it (99% on Rotten Tomatoes), especially D'Onofrio's Fisk, and it earned three Creative Arts Emmy nominations.
Good to know
- Episode 2, "Cut Man," ends with a hallway fight staged to look like one unbroken shot.
- Matt doesn't get his red suit, built by Melvin Potter, until the final episode.
- It was the first of Marvel's Netflix shows, leading to The Defenders (2017).
- Charlie Cox received a Helen Keller Achievement Award from the American Foundation for the Blind for his portrayal.
How to watch it
Start here for Marvel's Netflix era; it's the first of those shows and the base for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Defenders. Set aside time for "Cut Man" (episode 2) and the run from "Nelson v. Murdock" (episode 10) to the finale. It's mature and violent, closer to a crime drama than an Avengers movie. Watch it before Daredevil: Born Again, which brings back Cox, D'Onofrio and much of this cast.
