About Fantastic Four (1994)
This '90s cartoon leans heavily on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's 1960s comics, adapting many of them fairly closely. Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben take on Doctor Doom again and again, fight off the Skrulls and meet the Inhumans in a three-part saga. The cosmic material is where it shines, with a multi-episode take on the Silver Surfer and the coming of Galactus.
It aired in syndication from September 1994 to February 1996 as part of The Marvel Action Hour, paired each week with Iron Man, and ran for two seasons of 13 half-hour episodes. Beau Weaver voices Reed, Lori Alan voices Sue and Chuck McCann voices Ben. Johnny was voiced by Brian Austin Green in season 1 and Quinton Flynn in season 2, and Tony Jay plays Galactus. Fans disliked season 1's goofy humor and cheap animation, so season 2 was retooled under supervising producer Tom Tataranowicz with better animation, more mature writing and stories drawn from John Byrne's 1980s run as well as the Lee and Kirby era.
Good to know
- The Galactus arc runs across "The Silver Surfer & the Coming of Galactus" (two parts) and "The Silver Surfer and the Return of Galactus."
- Giorgio Moroder composed the music for season 1.
- Season 2 moves the team out of the Baxter Building and into Four Freedoms Plaza.
- Weaver and McCann reprised Reed and Ben in "Fantastic Fortitude," an episode of the 1996 Incredible Hulk cartoon.
- Disney+ leaves out the episode "Incursion of the Skrulls," likely because of its Twin Towers imagery.
How to watch it
Watch it alongside Iron Man (1994), its Marvel Action Hour partner, and before the 1996 Incredible Hulk series, which borrows Reed and the Thing for a crossover. If season 1 feels clunky, at least catch the Galactus episodes, then move on to season 2, which is the stronger season and includes the three-part Mask of Doom, the Inhumans Saga and the finale "Doomsday." Kirby-era purists and anyone raised on '90s Saturday-morning Marvel will feel at home.
