About Guardians of the Galaxy (2015)
This cartoon treats Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot as an established crew. In season 1 they get hold of the Spartaxian CryptoCube, which holds a map to the Cosmic Seed, a weapon that could create a new universe, and they have to destroy it before it can be used. Season 2 brings in the Avengers, the High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock, and the final season, Mission Breakout, turns the team into fugitives after the Collector frames them.
Marty Isenberg developed the series for Marvel Animation, and it ran on Disney XD from September 2015 to June 2019 across three seasons. Will Friedle voices Star-Lord, Trevor Devall is Rocket, Vanessa Marshall is Gamora, David Sobolov is Drax and Kevin Michael Richardson is Groot. Isaac C. Singleton Jr. voices Thanos, and Jonathan Frakes plays Star-Lord's father, J'son. Episodes are named after or reference pop songs from the 1960s to the 1980s. Season 1 holds an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Gizmodo said the show went "from disappointing to delightful."
Good to know
- Seth Green voices Howard the Duck, the only actor from the films to return.
- The team's guest spots on Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man were reportedly test runs for this show.
- Season 3 crosses over with the Spider-Man series, with Venom, Carnage and a Stan Lee guest role.
- A 12-song soundtrack album, Cosmic Mix Vol. 1, was released from season 1.
How to watch it
Start with season 1 for the Cosmic Seed story, which is the most self-contained arc and a good fit right after the 2014 film. The series doesn't follow MCU continuity, so treat it as its own thing. Season 2 is the one to pick if you want Adam Warlock and the High Evolutionary, and season 3 adds the Spider-Man crossover. Fans of the films' humor and retro music will feel at home, and it works well for kids, too.
