Lou Ferrigno voices the Hulk, tying it back to the live-action series.
About The Incredible Hulk (1996)
The '96 Hulk follows Bruce Banner on the run from the army while he looks for a cure. The Leader is the main villain, backed by the Gargoyle, the Abomination, Ogress and the Gamma Warriors, and Doctor Doom shows up in several episodes. Season 1 is fairly dark. For season 2, UPN wanted a lighter show with She-Hulk as a regular co-star, so it was retitled The Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk.
It aired on UPN, with Avi Arad, Stan Lee and Rick Ungar as executive producers and Tom Tataranowicz as showrunner. It ran from September 1996 to November 1997, with 13 episodes in season 1 and 8 in season 2. Lou Ferrigno voices the Hulk and Neal McDonough voices Bruce Banner, with Genie Francis as Betty Ross, John Vernon as Thunderbolt Ross, Matt Frewer as the Leader, Mark Hamill as the Gargoyle, Luke Perry as Rick Jones and Cree Summer as She-Hulk. After a management change, UPN became less interested in animation and there was no third season.
Good to know
- Lou Ferrigno, the live-action Hulk, voices the character here.
- "Fantastic Fortitude" brings in the Thing and Mister Fantastic, with Chuck McCann and Beau Weaver reprising their roles from the 1994 Fantastic Four series.
- Ghost Rider, Thor, Doctor Strange, Iron Man and War Machine all make guest appearances.
- The episode "The Lost Village" won an Emmy for audio editing.
- Wolverine was cut from one episode because of commitments to X-Men: The Animated Series.
How to watch it
Watch it after Fantastic Four (1994) and Iron Man (1994), since it shares their era of Marvel animation and crosses over with the Fantastic Four in "Fantastic Fortitude." Season 1 is the darker, more serious run. Season 2 brings in She-Hulk and a lighter tone, so it's a good next step for fans of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The Leader episodes carry the main arc, and it suits viewers who grew up on '90s Marvel cartoons.
