Why it’s worth knowing about
Part of the 1990s Marvel Action Hour; the second season is a big improvement on the first.
About Iron Man (1994)
This 1990s cartoon follows Tony Stark as he runs Stark Enterprises and fights as Iron Man. The Mandarin, armed with his power rings, is the main villain, and MODOK is among the other foes. Tony isn't alone either. His team, Force Works, includes War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter) and Century. Season one is mostly standalone adventures. Season two overhauls the show's premise and tone and shakes up the team.
It aired in syndication from 1994 to 1996 as part of The Marvel Action Hour, paired with Fantastic Four, and ran for 26 episodes over two seasons. Robert Hays voices Tony, Ed Gilbert and later Robert Ito voice the Mandarin, and Jim Cummings plays MODOK. Season two brought in head writer Tom Tataranowicz, a new theme, and a new animation studio. Many critics felt the characters were underdeveloped, though the backstory episodes are usually seen as the show's best.
Good to know
- Season 1's theme song was written by Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
- Season 2 lets Tony change armor by voice command and adds many new suits.
- Robert Hays and Dorian Harewood voiced Iron Man and War Machine again in The Incredible Hulk episode "Helping Hand, Iron Fist."
- Iron Man and War Machine also appear in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, including the three-part "Secret Wars."
Spoiler Spoilers for Iron Man (1994): tap to reveal
- Season 1 ends with Iron Man destroying the Mandarin's rings, which shrinks the villain's role in season 2.
- In season 2, most of Force Works walks out after Tony deceives them; only Julia Carpenter (Spider-Woman) and James Rhodes stay at his side.
How to watch it
Watch it alongside the 1994 Fantastic Four cartoon, since they aired together, and around Spider-Man: The Animated Series, where Iron Man also turns up. "The Origin of Iron Man" is a good place to start, and the season 2 premiere, "The Beast Within," shows how much the show changed. Season 2 is generally the stronger watch.
