Why it’s worth knowing about

The defining X-Men adaptation for a generation, and the series X-Men ’97 continues directly.

About X-Men: The Animated Series

X-Men: The Animated Series is the 1990s cartoon that made the X-Men household names for a generation. It follows Professor X's team as they fight Sentinels, Magneto's push toward war between humans and mutants and Apocalypse's plans to remake civilization, all while living in a world that hates them. It also dealt directly with prejudice, faith and loneliness, which was unusual for Saturday morning TV.

Eric Lewald was the developer and showrunner, alongside Mark Edward Edens and Sidney Iwanter. Marvel and Saban produced the show, with AKOM handling animation, and it aired on Fox Kids from October 31, 1992, to September 20, 1997, for 76 episodes across five seasons. Voice work was recorded in Toronto, with Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Cedric Smith as Professor X, Norm Spencer as Cyclops, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Lenore Zann as Rogue, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Chris Potter as Gambit, George Buza as Beast and Alyson Court as Jubilee. It was a top-rated Saturday morning show.

Good to know

How to watch it

Watch it before X-Men '97, which continues directly from the final episode. Make sure to see the Dark Phoenix episodes in season 3 and "Days of Future Past", since later X-Men movies drew on the same comics. Nostalgic fans will eat it up, and newcomers get the classic version of the team.
