Which Marvel Movie Should I Watch First?
Updated
Watch Iron Man (2008) first. It’s the first MCU film released, and every movie after it was made for people who’d seen the ones before. Nearly 40 films and 20-plus shows can feel like a lot, so here’s the spoiler-free starter guide: where to begin, what you can safely skip, and how to catch up fast.
The 3 paths, ranked
- The Beginner Path: a short run of titles that covers the main saga and leaves out the side stories. Start here if you want the story fast.
- Release order: every film in theater order. Start here if you want the full experience as fans lived it.
- Chronological order: the in-universe timeline. Best saved for a rewatch.
What can I skip?
More than you'd think. Every title on Marvel Watch Order is graded Essential / Recommended / Optional based on story connectivity, not quality. A big chunk of the MCU is optional if you only want to follow the main saga. The MCU essentials list is the cut-down version.
Do the Disney+ shows matter?
Some of them do. Since 2021 a few shows carry core story: Loki sets up the entire Multiverse Saga and WandaVision sets up Doctor Strange 2. If you're short on time, those are the two shows to watch.
How long will a full catch-up take?
Use our marathon planner: enter your hours per week and it estimates your finish date. At one to two hours a day, the films alone take about six weeks to three months; add every show on the main timeline and it’s more like four to eight months.
