Marvel in 1979

Captain America got his first proper TV outing in 1979. CBS aired a Captain America TV film on January 19 with Reb Brown as Steve Rogers, here an ex-Marine and struggling artist who drives a van and rides a motorcycle. A sequel, Captain America II: Death Too Soon, followed later that year, but reviews were mixed and no series came of it.

The rest of the year was busy elsewhere. In Japan, Toei and Marvel co-produced Battle Fever J, the first Super Sentai series in which the heroes pilot giant robots. ABC launched a Spider-Woman cartoon with Joan Van Ark voicing Jessica Drew. Meanwhile CBS ended The Amazing Spider-Man on July 6 after just 13 episodes, reportedly because it feared being seen as a superhero network.
