Why it’s worth knowing about
The two-part 'Prometheus' storyline flirted with giving Banner control of the Hulk, the show's boldest science-fiction swing.
About The Incredible Hulk: Season 3
Season three is the longest run of the show, with 23 episodes airing from September 21, 1979, to April 11, 1980. It opens with "Metamorphosis," in which a spiked drink at a rock concert sets off a transformation. From there it moves between some of the series' oddest and most personal stories. In "Homecoming," Banner goes back to his childhood home at Thanksgiving to make peace with his father and help his scientist sister, Helen, fight a crop-destroying plague. Elsewhere he ends up in a prison work camp, is hunted on a private island and wins a lottery jackpot.
Bill Bixby, Lou Ferrigno and Jack Colvin anchor the season, with Charles Napier now the Hulk's voice. McGee gets more to do as well. In "Proof Positive," the Register's new publisher orders him to drop his Hulk hunt, and in "Equinox" he finally gets a shot with a tranquilizer gun. Bixby later talked about how draining the location shoots were by this point.
Good to know
- "Homecoming" brings in Banner's family, with Diana Muldaur as his sister, Helen.
- "The Snare" is a take on The Most Dangerous Game, with Banner as the hunted man.
- In "Proof Positive," Bixby was unavailable, so a stunt double stood in as Banner and Bixby only appears in earlier footage.
- In "The Psychic," a San Francisco psychic sees the Hulk in Banner and predicts McGee's death.
How to watch it
Pick this up after season 2. "Homecoming" is the one to watch if you care about Banner's backstory, and "Proof Positive" is a rare McGee-focused episode. "The Snare" and "Metamorphosis" are good if you want the show at its pulpiest. Because the season is long and mostly standalone, it's easy to sample.
