Marvel in 2001
2001 is a quiet year between Marvel's two big turn-of-the-century hits. X-Men had come out in July 2000, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man was being finished for May 2002. The only new Marvel screen title was Mutant X, a syndicated action series that premiered on October 6, 2001.
Mutant X was created by Avi Arad, then running Marvel's film and TV side, and made with Tribune Entertainment and Fireworks Entertainment in Toronto. John Shea led the cast as Adam Kane, the scientist behind a team of genetically engineered "new mutants" played by Victoria Pratt, Victor Webster, Forbes March and Lauren Lee Smith. Despite the name, it has no connection to the Mutant X comic.
The show is best remembered for the legal fight it caused. 20th Century Fox, which held the X-Men film rights, sued Marvel in April 2001, arguing the series was too close to X-Men and was being sold as a replacement. Production went ahead on the condition that X-Men material stayed out of the marketing, and Fox and Marvel settled in 2003. Mutant X ran for three seasons and 66 episodes before ending on a cliffhanger in 2004. For fans following how mutants finally reached the MCU, it's an early example of how tangled the X-Men rights were.
FAQ
Is Mutant X connected to the X-Men?
Not officially. Mutant X was a Marvel-licensed series about genetically engineered humans, but Fox held the X-Men rights, so the show couldn't use X-Men characters. Fox sued over the similarities, and Marvel settled with Fox in 2003.
Were there any Marvel movies in 2001?
No. No Marvel movie was released in 2001. X-Men came out in 2000 and Spider-Man in May 2002, so Mutant X was the only new Marvel title that year.
How many Marvel movies and shows came out in 2001?
