Why it’s worth knowing about
Peggy Carter moves to Los Angeles in 1947 to investigate the mysterious Zero Matter.
About Agent Carter: Season 2
The second season jumps to 1947 and swaps New York for sunny Los Angeles. Peggy heads west to help Daniel Sousa, now chief of the SSR's West Coast office, after a woman's body turns up frozen in a lake. The case leads to Zero Matter, a strange substance, and a secret group of powerful men called the Council of Nine. The main villain is Whitney Frost, a Hollywood actress whose encounter with Zero Matter changes her, with gangster Joseph Manfredi as her muscle. New faces include physicist Jason Wilkes and Jarvis's wife, Ana.
ABC aired the ten episodes from January 19 to March 1, 2016, again during the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. winter break. Showrunners Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas and Chris Dingess gave the season a noir look, and Hayley Atwell, James D'Arcy, Chad Michael Murray and Enver Gjokaj all returned, joined by Wynn Everett as Frost, Ken Marino as Manfredi and Reggie Austin as Wilkes. Reviews were warmer about Frost and the cast than the ending, landing at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ratings were low, and ABC canceled the series on May 12, 2016.
Good to know
- Episode 9, "A Little Song and Dance," features a full musical dream sequence with dancers from Dancing with the Stars and an original song that was released as a single.
- Zero Matter is the show's version of the comics' Darkforce, and the writers coordinated with the Doctor Strange film team to avoid contradictions.
- Howard Stark buys land in Malibu, a nod to where Tony Stark's house will later stand.
- The season earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Superhero Television Series.
- Enver Gjokaj later brought Daniel Sousa back in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7.
How to watch it
Watch season 1 first, since this picks up Peggy's relationships with Sousa, Thompson and Jarvis. It's a lighter, funnier ten episodes than the first season, with more screwball comedy and Hollywood glamour, and Whitney Frost is the reason to stay. Because the show was canceled, a couple of threads are left hanging. If you want more of this cast afterward, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7 brings Sousa back and visits a 1950s setting that feels like a continuation.
