Marvel in 2016

Deadpool opened on February 12, 2016, and showed that an R-rated superhero comedy could make a lot of money. Fox approved it after test footage leaked in 2014, a leak Ryan Reynolds admitted to in 2025. It grossed about $783 million, the most of any R-rated film until Joker in 2019. X-Men: Apocalypse made far less in May.

Phase Three opened with Captain America: Civil War on May 6. The fight over the Sokovia Accords split the Avengers, and the film introduced Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther and Tom Holland's Spider-Man. It was the year's highest-grossing film. Doctor Strange followed in November with Benedict Cumberbatch and drew criticism for casting Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.
