About Big Hero 6: The Series
The series picks up right after the film. Hiro starts classes at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, juggling schoolwork and social life with secret superhero work with Go Go, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred. The team takes on a string of scientifically enhanced villains, while the season-long threat comes from Obake, a brilliant former SFIT student who wants to destroy San Fransokyo and rebuild it in his image.
Disney Television Animation produced it, with Kim Possible creators Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley developing it alongside Nick Filippi. Unlike the film, it's hand-drawn 2D animation. The pilot, "Baymax Returns," premiered on Disney XD on November 20, 2017, before the show moved to Disney Channel; it ran three seasons and ended on February 15, 2021. Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Jamie Chung, Genesis Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph and Alan Tudyk returned, with Khary Payton and Brooks Wheelan taking over as Wasabi and Fred, and Andrew Scott voicing Obake.
Good to know
- The pilot, "Baymax Returns," was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program.
- The show won an Annie Award in 2019 for its editorial team.
- It changes a few things from the film; for example, Fred comes up with the name "Big Hero 6," not Hiro.
- Season 3 switched to mostly 11-minute episodes, and a planned Karmi storyline was dropped.
- Marvel allowed IDW to publish a comic based on the show, a rare license for Marvel.
How to watch it
Watch the 2014 film first, since "Baymax Returns" picks up straight after it. Season 1 with the Obake storyline is the strongest stretch, and season 2 continues the overarching plot. Season 3 is lighter and more comedic, with shorter episodes, so it's fine to dip in and out. It's aimed at kids and families, but fans of the movie of any age will enjoy it. Afterward, try the Disney+ shorts Baymax!
