Marvel in 2017
Fox's best X-Men-related film came out in March 2017. Logan was rated R, opened wider than any R-rated film before it and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, which made it the first live-action superhero film nominated for its writing. Dafne Keen made her debut as Laura.
The MCU's year was led by two films. Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first film made under the Sony-Marvel arrangement, grossed $880.9 million, and Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok reinvented Thor as a comic lead and outearned both earlier Thor films. Inhumans was the year's flop. Its first two episodes ran in IMAX for $3.5 million before an ABC run that was canceled. On December 14, Disney agreed to buy 21st Century Fox.
