Why it’s worth knowing about
Noah Hawley’s mind-bending FX series, loosely connected to the X-Men. Runs three seasons.
About Legion
David Haller has spent most of his life believing he has schizophrenia. In the first season of Legion, a strange encounter with a fellow patient, Syd Barrett, makes him question that. A government agency called Division 3 hunts him, and a group of mutants at a hideout called Summerland rescues him. The season is about David learning what's real and what isn't inside his own mind, where something is hiding. What that something is becomes the season's central mystery.
Noah Hawley created the series for FX with Marvel Television, and the eight-episode first season ran from February 8 to March 29, 2017. Dan Stevens plays David, with Rachel Keller as Syd, Aubrey Plaza as Lenny, Bill Irwin, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton and Jean Smart. It was filmed in Vancouver. Critics loved its surreal, unconventional style, giving it a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and an 82 on Metacritic.

How to watch it
You don't need the X-Men films first, as Legion stands on its own. It's set apart from Fox's X-Men movies, so watch it whenever you like. Give it a couple of episodes, since the nonlinear storytelling is intentional and pays off in "Chapter 6" and "Chapter 7." It's best for viewers who like strange, stylish TV, including people who don't usually go for superhero shows.
