About What If...?: Season 3
Season 3 is the final run of What If...? and wraps up the Watcher's story across eight episodes. The stand-alone stories get big and strange: a Godzilla-sized Hulk fighting mech-suited Avengers in a 1970s and '80s anime style, Agatha Harkness in old Hollywood, Red Guardian forced into an uneasy alliance with Bucky Barnes, and a Western set in 1872 with Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop. The back half pulls in Captain Carter, Kahhori and a Mjolnir-wielding Storm as the Watcher himself becomes the story.
Matthew Chauncey took over as head writer from A. C. Bradley. Bryan Andrews and Stephan Franck shared directing, and Flying Bark Productions and Stellar Creative Lab handled animation. Jeffrey Wright narrates again as the Watcher, and Alison Sealy-Smith voices Storm. Episodes came out daily from December 22 to 29, 2024, as part of Phase Five. Marvel had announced in August 2024 that this would be the last season. Reviews were a little cooler than for season 2, with an 81% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
Good to know
- Jeffrey Wright earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for "What If... 1872?"
- Storm is voiced by Alison Sealy-Smith, who has played the character since X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men '97.
- The Hulk premiere is animated in 2D, styled after 1970s and '80s anime.
- Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis get their own episode, protecting their egg-born child.
- Andrews has said his one regret is not using Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.
How to watch it
Watch seasons 1 and 2 first. The last three episodes depend on the Watcher's earlier choices and on Captain Carter, Kahhori and Infinity Ultron. The first five are mostly self-contained, so you can sample "What If... 1872?" or the Red Guardian episode on their own. Agatha All Along gives the Agatha episode extra punch. This one's best for longtime fans who want the anthology to reach a proper finish.
