Marvel in 2011
Phase One's two remaining origin stories both came out in 2011. Kenneth Branagh's Thor opened on May 6 and introduced Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, who had auditioned for Thor before being cast as Loki. It also included Jeremy Renner's first, uncredited appearance as Hawkeye. On July 22, Captain America: The First Avenger brought in Chris Evans, who turned the part down three times before signing a six-picture deal, along with Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter and Sebastian Stan's Bucky.
Fox reset its own franchise between those two. X-Men: First Class, released on June 3, went back to 1962 and the Cuban Missile Crisis with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. Reviewers called it a return to form.
