About Logan
Logan picks up Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in 2029, in a world where no new mutants have been born for 25 years. Logan is worn down, his healing factor is failing, and he scrapes by as a limo driver in El Paso while hiding an ailing Charles Xavier across the border in Mexico. When he's drawn into escorting a young mutant girl named Laura to a supposed refuge called Eden, he reluctantly takes the job, with Donald Pierce and his cyborg Reavers hunting them. It's loosely based on the Old Man Logan comics and plays like a Western road movie.
James Mangold directed and co-wrote it with Scott Frank and Michael Green for 20th Century Fox, with Patrick Stewart as Xavier, Dafne Keen in her film debut as Laura, Boyd Holbrook as Pierce, Stephen Merchant as Caliban and Richard E. Grant as Dr. Zander Rice. The R-rated, 137-minute film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and opened March 3, 2017. It earned about $619 million worldwide and is widely seen as the best-reviewed X-Men film.
Good to know
- It was the first live-action superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
- Jackman reportedly took a pay cut to help the film get its R rating.
- A noir edition, Logan Noir, regraded shot by shot, was released on home video.
- The X-Men comic books seen in the film were created just for it, since Marvel allowed its characters to be used but not real issues.
- Jackman billed it as his farewell to the role, but he returned as Wolverine in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
Spoiler Spoilers for Logan: tap to reveal
- Logan dies at the end of the film, and Deadpool & Wolverine opens at his grave before Deadpool goes looking for a different Wolverine.
- Patrick Stewart's first MCU appearance is as the Earth-838 Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
How to watch it
Logan is the last chapter of Fox's Wolverine story, so watch it after X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine, and ideally after X-Men: Days of Future Past. Many fans watch it last in any X-Men marathon because of its far-future setting. Go into Deadpool & Wolverine afterward, since that film builds on Jackman's history in the role. It's a heavy, violent, grown-up drama, best for viewers who want character over spectacle.

Logan FAQ
Is Logan based on Old Man Logan?
Loosely. It borrows the idea of an aging Wolverine in a bleak future from Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Old Man Logan comics, but tells its own story.
Is Logan connected to Deadpool & Wolverine?
Loosely. Deadpool & Wolverine brings Hugh Jackman back as a different Wolverine variant rather than continuing this film's story, so Logan's ending still stands. How the two films touch is a spoiler for both, so it's in the reveal box above.
Was Logan Patrick Stewart's last time as Professor X?
He said so at the time, but he later played a different version of Charles Xavier in the MCU. Where he first turned up was a cameo surprise, so it's in the spoiler box above.
Can you skip Logan?
Yes. It sits outside the MCU, so you’d watch it for the characters’ history, not for anything the MCU plot needs.
When was Logan released?
Logan was released on March 3, 2017.
Is Logan part of the MCU?
No. Logan is a Marvel film made outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it isn’t on Marvel Studios’ official timeline.
