Why it matters now
A critical disaster that turned into the 'Morbin' time' internet joke, though it still added to Sony's Spider-Man Universe.
About Morbius
Michael Morbius is a scientist who has spent his life fighting a rare blood disease. His experiment with vampire-bat DNA cures him but turns him into something close to a living vampire, and he has to keep his new hunger under control. His adoptive brother Milo has his own reasons to want the cure, which puts the two on a collision course.
Daniel Espinosa directed from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Jared Leto stars, with Matt Smith as Milo, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson. Planned for July 2020, it was delayed several times by the pandemic and finally opened on April 1, 2022, running 104 minutes. It earned $167.5 million worldwide and was panned by critics, though Smith got some praise. Leto won the Razzie for Worst Actor.
Good to know
- It is the third film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.
- The mid-credits scenes were reshot to fit Spider-Man: No Way Home, and critics singled them out.
- The ironic "It's Morbin' time" meme led Sony to re-release it in about 1,000 theaters in June 2022, where it made only about $300,000.
Spoiler Spoilers for Morbius: tap to reveal
- Michael Keaton returns as Adrian Toomes, the Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming, in the mid-credits scenes.
How to watch it
Morbius sits in Sony's Spider-Man Universe just before Madame Web. Spider-Man: No Way Home is worth watching first, since the mid-credits scenes follow on from it, and Spider-Man: Homecoming adds useful context. The main story stands alone. It's really for SSU completists and fans of Marvel's horror side, plus anyone who wants to see what the meme was about.
