Why it matters in the MCU

Short, wordless shorts with Baby Groot. Purely for fun. Nothing in them affects the wider story.

About I Am Groot: Season 1

The first batch of I Am Groot shorts follows the little sprout from Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) through five tiny adventures: his first steps, a run-in with tiny blue creatures called the Grunds, a chase after a Gangalorian squirrel bird, a bath gone wrong and a grand creative project. A shape-shifting alien named Iwua, who copies Groot, also shows up.

Kirsten Lepore wrote and directed all five shorts, with James Gunn as an executive producer and photoreal CG animation from Luma Pictures. Vin Diesel recorded new lines as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper voices Rocket, Trevor Devall voices Iwua, and Gunn himself voices a wristwatch. The shorts run about 4 to 6 minutes each, around 15 minutes in all. They premiered on August 10, 2022, as part of Phase Four. Reviews were warm, with an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score and praise for the pacing and gags.

Good to know

How to watch it

Watch these after Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when Groot is still a baby. Gunn has said he sees the shorts as canon to themselves, so don't worry about fitting them into the larger timeline. All five take less time than a single TV episode, so watch them in one go. "Groot Takes a Bath" and "Magnum Opus" are the standouts. They're dialogue-light and work well for young kids.
