Do I Need to Watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

No. You don't need Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to follow the MCU films or Avengers: Doomsday. The ABC series (2013 to 2020, seven seasons, 136 episodes) ties into the films during its early seasons, but it isn't on Marvel's official timeline and the films never return the favor. Watch it because you want more, not because you'll be lost without it.

Is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. canon?

It was made to fit the MCU, yet Marvel's current official timeline leaves it out. Clark Gregg returns as Phil Coulson, picking up after The Avengers, and the early seasons react directly to the films. But Marvel Studios' official timeline book from October 2023 doesn't include Marvel Television's series, and the later seasons drift away from the films. The long version is on Is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. canon?

Why isn't Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the list?

This is the question we see most. The reason is who made it. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. came from Marvel Television, a separate division from Marvel Studios, which makes the films and the Disney+ series. Marvel Studios' official timeline covers its own projects and leaves out Marvel Television's shows.

The Netflix shows were in the same position until January 2024, when Disney+ added them to its MCU timeline (our Netflix canon guide has the details). S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't part of that change.

The show's own choices didn't help. Season 6 deliberately avoids referencing Infinity War and Endgame, and the showrunners acknowledged the series no longer lined up with the films' timeline. It's hard to put a show on an official timeline when the show itself stepped off it.

Should I watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Our verdict

First-timers: skip it for now. Get through the films first. If you're curious, start season 1 after The Avengers and watch through "Turn, Turn, Turn" once you've seen The Winter Soldier. The early episodes are slow, and several critics, including IGN and Zap2it, felt the show improved after the Winter Soldier tie-in, so that's a fair trial.

Completionists: yes, if you like ensemble spy shows and don't mind 136 episodes. Seasons 1–5 reward watching alongside the films, and season 7's time-travel story brings back Enver Gjokaj's Daniel Sousa from Agent Carter (his full arc is in our Daniel Sousa watch order).

Doomsday crammers: no. Coulson and the show's own agents aren't in Doomsday's announced cast.
